Learn To Play Hockey Program

The learn-to-play hockey program is geared towards the beginning player with an emphasis on skill development. Players are divided into groups and instructed by experienced, USA Hockey certified coaches. Children who participate in the program are given priority registration status for PHA Hockey teams the following fall, if age eligible

LEARN TO PLAY 2018/2019

 Learn to Play Instructional Program
Program intended for players 4-9 years of age (born 2009-2014).
This is a Learn to Play (intro to hockey) program.

Program Format:

  • The season runs September 8 through April 27 and is divided into sessions consisting of seven skates.  There will be no skates on 11/24, 12/22, 12/29, 2/2, 3/30, or 4/6.
  • Each session is $85*.
  • On-ice skill development Saturdays 2:00pm-2:50pm
  • All sessions held at the Plymouth Cultural Center (525 Farmer, Plymouth).


  • Session #350100-01 skates September 8 through October 20
  • Session #350100-03 skates October 27 through December 15 (no skate November 24)
  • Session #350100-05 skates January 5 through February 23 (no skate on Feb. 2)
  • Session #350100-07 skates March 2 through April 27 (no skates March 30 or April 6)
  • On-Line Registration is available at Learn To Play Registration .
    First time users must contact the Recreation Office to be set-up with a user id and password.  Contact the office by e-mail at or (734) 455-6620 x0.

*USA HOCKEY REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED for the 2018-2019  playing season.  USA Hockey is the governing body of youth hockey.  Registration is free to children 6 & Under.  There is a $45 fee for children 7 & Older that is in addition to the program fee.  Register at by the first skate and forward the confirmation email to  

FULL EQUIPMENT IS REQUIRED and includes athletic supporter with cup (boys) or pelvis protector (girls), shin guards, hockey socks, hockey pants, elbow pads, shoulder pads, jersey, unexpired hockey helmet with full face guard, neck guard, gloves, skates and ice hockey stick.   A limited number of gear sets are available to borrow from the Recreation Department for use during the session and can be reserved on-line when registering.  There is a $50 deposit required to use gear.  The fee is refunded when the gear is returned in good condition.

Walk-In Registration will be taken at the City of Plymouth Recreation Department located in the Plymouth Cultural Center, 525 Farmer, Plymouth, MI 48170.

PLEASE NOTE: If a refund is desired, the request must be made at least 14 days before the start of the session.  We are unable to issue credit or offer make-up skates for missed dates.
